My 2023 Hyundai Ioniq5

I have owned my car for over two years and, so far, I'm very happy with it. The car has had no issues, with the exception of a few recalls, which were all fixed promptly by the DGDG Hyundai dealership. While I am satisfied with the car itself, my experience with Hyundai dealerships has been disappointing. I purchased my car at the San Bruno, California dealership and had many unpleasant experiences there. As a result, I now take my car for service at the DGDG Hyundai dealership instead. It seems that Hyundai dealerships, in general, need to improve their management. Online reviews also suggest that many customers are unhappy. Because of these negative experiences with the dealerships, I will not be purchasing another car from Hyundai, even though I'm happy with my current vehicle.

Great car. Would definitely buy another.

Love the Ioniq 5. It drives easily, charges in my garage easily, and does everything I need it to do. My family enjoys driving it, too. The whole "no gas" thing has definitely won over everyone in our household. The rear seats drop down for easy cargo hauling. I have made several runs to my cabin up north (2 hour drive) and it performs admirably, even on unmaintained roads. I have had it in to Hyundai for service, and they are amazing over there.

When its running well, it's a great vehicle

This vehicle is a lot of fun to drive. After purchasing the vehicle, was surprised to learn about the hidden maintenance costs such as replacing the 12V battery every two years. I learned this the hard way, and without warning. There should be a warning message displayed at least a week before a 12V needs replacement. Currently, the only warning is after the 12V has failed. Surprised to learn the tires need replacing every 20k miles, or sooner if a foam insert becomes unglued which causes extreme shimmy on the highway. For that issue, the dealership was of little help, other than to charge over $600 for a replacement. The ICCU failure issue occurred in my vehicle, without warning. And I had to call a tow truck and wait about a month for a replacement ICCU. Customer service was ineffective at expediating a replacement ICCU. And the chance of repeat failure makes me hesitant to drive this vehicle on long trips. I would expect Hyundai to send a clear message to all their impacted customers that this issue will be solved and/or the ICCUs will be replaced past the standard 10yr warranty. The Level 1 factory installed charger failed at year 2, and the local dealership said it is unlikely they will replace it. When I called Hyundia customer service, the representative suggested I take it to another dealership. I would expect Hyundia to have greater authority over what a dealership is willing to replace under warranty. After my recent experience, I am seriously concerned about hidden maintenance costs. And would hesitate to recommend this vehicle to a friend.

Amazing spaceship type car but some software and part recalls

Overall I'm very happy with my Ioniq 5, it really is futuristic and I haven't had issues with the bells and whistles of this car. Within the first year though it would not reliably connect to my home charger meaning I often woke up with no charging and had to go charge at a station. At the time charging at Electrify America stations was free (having 2 years of free charging from Hyundai is an awesome perk). It took a long time and the issue wasn't fully fixed until many months later when the ICCU was replaced and covered under warranty. I have zero charging problems now. The other issue that came up is my 12v battery kept draining. I took it in multiple times over about a year with gaps in-between where it worked. It ultimately wasn't fixed until I replaced the battery myself. It's very confusing to me why Hyundai didn't just replace the battery from the beginning. They just kept recharging it instead and did software updates that might help. By the time they told me they needed to replace the 12v it was no longer under the 2 year warranty. When this issue first happened it was within that time period. My options were to pay them $500-600 to replace or to replace it myself, which they didn't actually tell me that was an option- I realized that myself. I replaced the battery myself for about $350. It was a very big hassle where i'd be driving my car and suddenly lots of flashing and beeping and warnings to pull over. Then my car would completely shut off and I'd be stranded. I'd wait for Hyundai assistance to send local help and it'd take up to an hour of waiting. A couple times I had my young kids with me, it was stressful to say the least. Now that the issue is fixed I have no problems and my car works great but getting here was a big pain for my first new car purchase. I still don't regret buying an ioniq 5 but at the time it was a newer model for Hyundai and there were big growing pains.

Love this car, but...

I've never enjoyed a car more: great features, comfortable ride, great interior and exterior design. BUT -- something needs to be done about the ICCU failures. The software updates, and I've been compliant with all, aren't fixing the issue. And I'm not hearing about any redesign improvements coming any time soon.

GREAT FIRST EV

Wanted a ski car, this fits the bill in every way. Only negative is the lack of rear wiper, but with good outside mirrors it never had been an issue. The two downsides for this car, #1 Has poor resale value #2 Dealer was a terrible experience both in buying the car and service department.

Small irratations

The car's performance has been good. I did need a major part replaced having to do with the inability to charge the battery or start the car. Newer models have corrected the inconvenience of not having a rear window wiper. There has also been a rattle issue with the back hatch. A recall 90% solved the rattle and I've not heard of newer models having the same issue. I'm in an older generation. There's much more "infotainment" that I need or use, some I use so infrequently I have to go to the "manual" to relearn the procedures. A final comment, when the major parts were being replaced I was without my car for 5 1/2 weeks. After two days I was given a loaner, still, that's way too long to be without my car.

My first, but not last Hyundai EV

A steep, but very pleasant learning curve was necessary to get really acquainted with my Ioniq 5. The car was simply loaded with stuff I had never expected in this price-range. Since I am a confirmed electronics enthusiast I enjoyed getting to know it all. In the time I owned this vehicle not one thing, not one single thing went wrong! This was the first car I ever owned where this happened. The ride is super quiet and very comfortable; maybe not as cushiony as my previous car, a top-of-the-line Cadillac, but that one is simply 19th Century compared to this Ioniq 5. So, when the lease was up it was a no-brainer to switch to the next Ioniq 5.

Love it but concerns on the fit and finish.

I love this car but my concerns have been proven correct. After only 2/12 years of ownership and less than 11k in miles, the front driver seat stitching has caused micro tears in the pleather. Also, on both rear windows the black trim paint is starting to peel off. So give you some concept of this, I painted my Hyundai emblems with Dip You Car peelable paint 2 years ago. That paint has no issues with it but the trim paint is starting to peel off. It just a small area but again after 2 1/2 years and less than 11k miles on the car this should not happen.

Good, versatile vehicle

Good, reliable vehicle. Features, reliability and versatility are great. Price went up too much to get next level up trim package (from SE to SEL) and paint color, value is medium on this vehicle. Range could be longer, but that is an general BEV problem.

Decent with nice features.

Been a good vehicle despite the lack of rear wiper and squeaky rear hatch. Had to fix with velcro pads, 3 recalls couldn't fix the issue.

It's perfect, almost

I love the ride, comfort, speed, and absolute silence of driving this car. It is, as I called it, almost perfect. The lack of redundancy on the ICCU is more than troubling. Having gone through an ICCU failure and now a 12v battery failure, it is probably the one glaring issue I have with the car. When the ICCU fails and inevitably the 12v battery dies you are left with no way to put it in neutral, no blinkers, no lights of any kind, and absolutely no way to engage the drive system even if you're at 100% main battery. The fact that the entire cars computer and all electronics is left to run off of a standard 12v battery and not even an AGM battery is a terrible design in my opinion. Recently, I was at an EV show and had the rear hatch and frunk open to show the details of the car. It was open for about 3 hours. In that time, my 12v battery was drained from lights and other things, and I had to use my jumper pack to be able to start the car. Relying on a lead acid battery to run quite literally everything is a poor choice. Please fix that.

Very happy with our purchase

We love the style, look and feel of the car. We also love the space and interior finishes. Overall, we have had a very good experience with the Ioniq 5 and do not regret not buying a Tesla. The only issues we have had with the vehicle are: 1) the noise attenuation linings in two of the tires separated within the first 15,000 miles which cost us $250 plus to replace one tire because my wife wasn't aware we could simply remove the lining, 2) the salesperson did not tell us about the special care required for the matte finish before we agreed to purchase our vehicle, 3) it is irritating to have to connect to the center USB port near the center floor for Bluetooth, and 4) it is very irritating not having a rear wiper. If not for these issues, we would have rated the vehicle 5 stars.

Excellent way to reduce carbon emissions and drive like a king

Excellent, attractive design and engineering. I love the love, responsiveness and low maintenance. I would, however, place the turn signal lights on the dash someplace where the steering wheel does not cover them and place the turn signal lights on the outside mirrors so that they can be seen by the driver during the day. Finally, a back window wipe would add value to the car especially for those of us compulsive about clean windows. A better radio would be a plus too.
