Smooth, quiet and Comfortable

We love our Ionic 5. It looks great, is fun to drive, very comfortable, and also very comfortable. If the electric charging port was located near the front it would be perfect.

Good overall

There are issues on the interior that could be fixed. 1. Very difficult to see door lock/unlock buttons on the door. I had to use green and red nail polish on each button so we could see it more easily. 2. The sun roof is a complete waste on us, I wish we could have gotten the car without it 3. the buttons on the dash are very difficult to see in day-light. I had to type out the labels and tape them to the dash so we can see them. 4. make all the controls easier to use and find. Knobs are the best. I frequently have to pull over so I can figure out how to use the audio, or change the temperature etc. Simpler is better 5. I would like to change the display panel, IE move the location of the time widget. It is blocked by my hand on the wheel. I'd like to move the time display to the top of the display panel so I can see it all the time. Instead, I have to move my hand every-time I need to see the time 6. There is no rear window wiper. I carry a squeegee and a rag to clean the rear window when I am on a trip. I have to pull into a parking lot to clean the window. I am getting used to relying on my side mirrors and not the rear window to see traffic behind me. This seems like a major flaw 7. The rear cargo area is much smaller than it needs to be because of the dramatic slope of the window. The cargo area is already small, and half of it is unusable due to the slope of the window. 8. We were supposed to have gotten an adapter so we can use Tesla chargers. That has not happened yet. Charging EV's needs to be as easy as putting gas in a regular car. Charging on a trip is the biggest drawback and source of anxiety 9. We know we are using a mere fraction of what the vehicle's capabilities are. Produce a "keep it simple" basic EV including those most used features in the vehicle you are producing now. I assume you can see, and do look at every feature car owners use. Evidenced by the obvious interaction between Hyundai and our vehicle at all hours of the day and night. 10. If the Chinese BYD (beyond your dreams) was available in the US, we would have strongly considered it. Just because your engineers can include every bell and whistle, doesn't mean you should. 11. How much would that car have cost if we hadn't had to pay for all the features that we never use. 12. the main reason we chose the Ionic 5, was ease of getting in and out of the vehicle. It was a buy/no buy deal breaker in a lot of EV's that we looked at. We like the small SUV size, but don't need a rolls royce rolling computer.

Great car, needs a few fixes

The Ioniq 5 looks great and drives great. However, the Navigation system looks outdated and has trouble finding charging stations. Also the issues with the faulty ICCU needs to be better addressed by Hyundai.

Overall I love the vehicle. I wish I could set battery preconditioning without setting an EV charger as my destination in the vehicle’s navigation. I used Apple Maps. I wish my trunk didn’t rattle like it was gonna fall off (currently the vehicle is at the dealership getting this rattle diagnosed.). Love everything else about it.

Fine EV

This EV is a solid buy. While it won’t knock your socks off in terms of performance or features, it has enough of core comforts to make ownership easy.

Not worth the $50k+ price tag

I was really disappointed with this vehicle. Hyundai prices for the vehicle is way too much and the quality of the car is not good. There squeaky noise every time I went on a speed breaker or a dip. Even just exiting the house drive way you can hear a squeaky noise. Horrible build quality especially if your charging $50k+. At that price I can purchase a Mercedes. Honestly not worth wasting your money of this car.

I smelled burning plastic and got a check electrical warning

The car drives great, the safety features are fantastic. All around I would give it a 5/5 if we had not had a warning indicating an electrical error (preceded by the small of burning plastic) that the dealer said was not a problem because there is no warning at the current time. Something melted, I would like the standard procedure to be hunting down the location of the issue and then replacing the wires. Instead since there is no code, they did a minimal visual inspection and called it a day. My wife and I now fear that at any moment we can have a catastrophic error that will force us into turtle mode. We often use this car for our road trips, and now we wonder if it will be the reason our next road trip is ruined. All those worries would go away if your dealers were incentivized to better investigate these issues. We also had an electrical fault take out the daylight detection sensor when the car was less than a year old. Leaving us with a dim dashboard for about a week. One other thing we have a creak in the back of the car that the dealer twice tried to fix and it still is noisy. For that and the ICCU issue I am marking down the Build Quality,.

Pluses and Minuses

The Ionic 5 hits a lot of sweet spots. It has good range, charges quickly, has a nice interior (see note), and plenty of space in the cabin and in the back. Hyundai includes the features people want and need without nickel and diming for every little thing and the vehicle is affordable. It handles well on the road (see note) and is comfortable and quiet. Build quality is generally good but I have all sort of squeaks from the back storage area; don't even notice them anymore but my wife certainly does. Downsides include the inability for Hyundai to get its story straight about service. The car, the app, and the dealers all have different schedules on when services is due and I'm being offered deals on engine oil changes, which isn't helpful on an EV. When I completed my 1-year service (I just figured that made sense since the other sources were confused), it didn't post so I kept getting nagged that service was due. Another downside is the checked decorative trim on the door which is made of such soft material that it is inevitable that it is doing to get damaged by a watch or bracelet. The lack of a rear window wiper is an issue too. A big concern is the suspension. If I am braking and simultaneously going over a short significant bump or pothole, the car "disconnects from the ground" for an instant (and this is the exact phrase I use when describing this to others). It is the strangest feeling through the steering wheel and the sensation is that the car is not responding to my control input. It is very brief but I've never experienced that before. I especially hope the 5N has addressed this. Now I am having another problem, this one potentially very serious. It is starting to display software glitches. The first one I noticed was in the traffic warning alerts. I am sitting still at a signal and then all of a sudden the warning system is complaining about the car in front of me or to the side. It is very erratic and I am not seeing a pattern. The sensors aren't dirty and haven't been blinded by sunlight or specular reflections. Next the display dimmer quit. The mechanical switch beeps and displays on the dash but it won't go brighter or dimmer. Now, when I start the car, it selects dim during daylight and bright at night (the opposite of what it should be doing) and won't change. The display doesn't reflect the actual value either. I can't see the center screen very well in daylight because it is so dim. Then, this morning, when I started the car the side mirrors did not deploy and I had to use the door switch to get them out. I am in Southern California so it isn't excessive rain or cold that is causing this. It is almost certainly in software. I am going to contact the dealership and see if there is an over-the-air update or reboot they can push to me but I'm going to guess that this is going to be a blown day or two at the dealership itself. The car also frequently loses connectivity to my phone app. I can deal with the small issues but this sort of thing cascades and I fully expect, if left unaddressed, that the car will either not start at some point or go dead while I am driving.
