This is my 3rd EV and it definitely pulls it all together and delivers the best EV experience.

Like this car, but it has its quirks

The Ionic 5 is a great car to drive. The mileage isn't great, but it is workable, especially if you are not planning long road trips. It handles well, is quiet, and seems very well built. The quirks have more to do with service. I kept getting notices that service was due, but the dealer told me that was not the case. After I finally got the service, I kept getting notices that maintenance was required. It isn't. I contacted the company and it has been about a month and they have not resolved the problem. They said that it sometimes takes weeks to get a response, which is not at all satisfying. We were told that we would get an adaptor so that we could use other charger types. They said it would take a while, as they had to produce and distribute a large number of them. They said I should get it by or around December 1, 2025, but I haven't heard a word (as of January 8, 2026. I like this car and am glad I bought it, but the experience hasn't been perfect.

I like the way the car drives and handles. it seems well designed EXCEPT for not having a rear windshield wiper and spray. control of the navigation screen is clumsy and not intuitive; updates to nav system are a mystery; instructions unclear. sometimes it will not let you turn on the radio unless you stop and put in park...this is joke! Maybe today's update fixed that?

Would buy again, good but not great

I love my 2024 IONIQ 5. I have owned it for about 6 months and I have only had one minor issue. During light to medium rain for a prolonged period of driving the Smart Cruise Control stopped working. This is apparently an issue that occurs in certain conditions and the issue did clear on it's own after the rain stopped. However, the cruise control required me to keep my foot on the accelerator which was very tiring during a long drive. I like that the fuel cost at home is fixed, so other than long trips where I need to charge using a DC Fast Charger, I know how much the cost is going to be. Most of my power for charging comes from Solar so I am thankful for that. The range (300+miles) is accurate in the city but not on the highway which is closer to 200 miles. So this is a bit misleading, This IS NOT A Hyundai or IONIQ 5 issue but an issue with the way EV Range is portrayed in general. For my limited time in the car, it is a very good car. But I would not characterize it as a great car. That bar is a bit higher for me.

Great car. Terrible turn radius.

I love this car and I cut it a lot of slack because of how nice it is. Its extremely comfortable to drive. I dont have a rear wiper and it doesnt bug me at all. My biggest complaint is turn radius. It is abysmal, and gets me into a pickle from time to time requiring a 3 point turn in the middle of an intersection. My other minor complaint is that the steering assist is almost unusable if there are any turns in the freeway, which is common in inner city freeways. It will ping pong between the lines and sometimes drift over the line. I love this car though.

Good - but has quirks

I get random "notifications" that seem to go away after I re-start the vehicle. Also, it is developing rattles! Not a comfort when driving.

Love the car, but there are some annoying surprises

We love the quiet ride, safety features, and the fact we're using fewer fossil fuels. On the negative side, out battery controller died without warning on a highway putting us in a dangerous situation, and it took two weeks to fix and the dealer/maintenance staff didn't seem to have a clue about what was wrong. And there are some silly things, like the fact that the tire pressure sensor doesn't reset when we fix a tire pressure problem, and the design of the rear window makes it collect dirt and need cleaning often to be able to see out. But these are minor.

Fun!

I have always driven fuel efficient ICE cars. The IONIQ5 is a significant upgrade. The ride quality is excellent. I have the single motor RWD version but it still accelerates quickly. I have no trouble zipping around in heavy traffic. The efficiency is great in milder weather and I have no guilt driving a larger, faster car. I used to hate driving but now it is fun. At seventy years old, I have transformed into a car guy. Thanks, Hyundai!

Overall, really good, but a few details prevent it from being great!

I love the acceleration, handling and ride quality of the car. Comfort of seats is good. I like the instrumentation, although a few more hard buttons to directly access some controls would be useful. Sliding rear seats are awesome. Storage is weak; the frunk is a joke, the trunk is too shallow to hold much, and the dash and center console storage are poorly designed. Why no coin holder? The lack of rear window wiper is nearly criminal.

Very happy BUT …

Very happy with the car EXCEPT that there’s no rear wiper. Very difficult to see and at times feels dangerous. Did not realize this when we started signed our lease.

Car drives well, if it weren't for the I-Pedal disengaging every start

It is very unsafe to remember to step on brake pedal after going into reverse and back to drive.

Rattling lift gate

Overall, I love the car and the way it drives. The range in could weather is alert down but not a huge deal. The has been a rattling coming from the lift gate since I bought the car. I've taken it into service 2 times and they've "fixed" it both times. Good thing it's a lease and I'm giving the car back. For some season, every so often, every sensor/safety system will freak out and turn off and will come back the next day.
