It could be so much the better

As much as I've enjoyed the car for the first 12 months of my lease, the last 30 days have been a frustrating nightmare. The 12-volt battery failed, bricking the car. Once towed to the dealer, the ICCU needs to be replaced under warranty. 30 days have lapsed, and there is no ETA on when a replacement will be received. I cannot recommend this vehicle, new or used. Hyundai customer support has been "looking into it" for the last 15 days and has made no headway. If you want a fun ticking time bomb, go for it; if you want a reliable daily drive that won't leave you stranded without warning, look somewhere else.

2024 IONIQ 5 Review

After a year of driving the IONIQ 5, I’ve realized it is not the car for me - or likely anyone who has a regular commute and cannot charge at home. It delivers a comfortable ride with a fun driving experience and nice displays and interior, but the logistics of charging, the wildly variable range estimates, and single point of failure electronics are enough of a frustration for me that this is not a car I want to keep.

Constant failures due to 12V and ICCU issues. Extremely unreliable.

I had high hopes for the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5, but unfortunately, my experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. The vehicle constantly fails due to recurring 12V battery failures and persistent ICCU (Integrated Computer Control Unit) issues. These problems have made the car unreliable and frustrating to own. The 12V battery keeps dying unexpectedly, leaving me stranded and forcing me to jump-start the car repeatedly. It's incredibly inconvenient and raises serious concerns about the vehicle's electrical system and overall durability. On top of that, the ICCU issues cause various electronic glitches, including malfunctioning displays, loss of connectivity, and sometimes, the car simply refusing to start. Despite multiple visits to the dealership and repeated attempts at repairs, these problems persist, leaving me deeply disappointed. The car's supposed advanced technology feels more like a liability than an asset. For a vehicle in this price range, I expect better quality and reliability. Overall, I cannot recommend the 2024 Ioniq 5 to anyone looking for a dependable electric vehicle. The ongoing electrical issues have turned what should be an exciting EV experience into a constant headache.

Great summer car not so good Winter car

I love driving my car in the summer. In the winter, the ranges reduced by half ice builds up on the sensors and wiper mounts. There’s no rear visibility because of no rear wiper and camera always dirty.

Great little car in most respects, but...

After a year and a little over 20k miles, we've been very happy with our 2024 Ioniq 5. It's reliable, zippy, and has a beautiful, comfortable, and functional interior. On the downside, the software is a bit clunky and never seems to receive useful updates (like displaying the battery temperature, or providing a way to precondition manually, along with dozens of other minor annoyances). The cameras and driver assist functions are terrific. We even recommended it to a friend who bought his own 2025 Ioniq 5. Unfortunately his ICCU failed after a few thousand miles, and it has been in the shop for a month now. The ICCU failures are a well-known problem for these cars and have been since the 2022 model, but for some reason Hyundai has completely botched the response by (1) providing almost no official information, (2) not manufacturing and distributing enough spares to be able to rapidly replace ICCUs when they do fail, leading to multi-month wait times for parts, and (3) not actually fixing the design despite four model years and at least two recalls. The ICCU failures are just a huge, huge problems that can leave a driver stranded, and they don't seem to be taking it seriously at all. I don't know whether they appreciate how damaging this is to the brand. I know several people who considered and Ioniq 5 but heard about the ICCU issues and decided to go with a different brand. Hyundai could be dominating the market if they handled this better, because in almost every other respect it's a terrific little car.

Good car, not great.

Good care, not great. My main beef is the absence (and lack of recourse to remedy) of several basic features: No walkaway autolock (even though the technology to accomplish is already there - it's just not an option). No digital key support for iPhone (2024 Disney Limited model) - this was an enormous disappointment! Rear hatch loose rattle. Infotainment interface not intuitive. I've had the car two years, and I still have to peck and hunt when I want to adjust something.

Like Stepping into the Future

My Ioniq5 is very responsive, takes off like a bullet and stops on a dime. Quiet interior makes for a nice ride anywhere. Loads of cargo space, which is handy for a musician like myself. Great visibility, too, with good use of cameras and mirrors.

First EV

Overall, I have been satisfied with the Ionic 5. It was my first experience with an EV. The vehicle is roomy, easy to operate, has a comfortable ride, is quiet on the road, and user friendly technology. I was underwhelmed by its performance in snow and cold weather. It did not handle as well as I hoped in the snow and the battery life decreased by much more than advertised if you wanted to be comfortable and actually use the cabin heat to stay warm. The lack of a rear window wiper is a huge miss. The vehicle needed towing twice in the first 20 months of ownership, one time for a software glitch that was not allowing the battery to charge, and one time for the 12v battery that went bad and didn't allow the car to unlock or start. These were disappointing things to deal with for a brand new car in the first 20 months.

Ioniq 5 - Great Car

I'm very happy with my Ioniq 5, with a few exceptions. First, I believe some of the 2024 models are losing engine power at 20,000 miles. Global Hyundai told me my VIN was not one of these models. I pray they are correct. Second, service is the weak link. The staff at Global Hyunday have not been properly trained to service electric cars. The last problem I presented to them was diagnosed by me and the iternet. Three hours later, they concluded by diagnosis was correct and replaced my 12 volt battery. No charge, but pathetic that they didn't know this immediately.

Good, but lacking technology basics, bad battery leaves car dead!

The car is great, but has a terrible 12v battery tech is disappointing. Had i known it would be this bad, i wouldn't have bought it. its the only sour mark on an otherwise very good car so far.

Converted me to EVs

I leased the Ioniq 5 as a daily driver, complementing my fun cars. It really surprised me due to its level of technology and affordability, with great value for money. It charges really fast (not in the winter but still) and makes long trips manageable with good planning.

Great car with very comfortable ride

We love our Ioniq 5 which we leased based on the recommendation of our son who loves his. One complaint: the rear hatch rattles and after two trips to the dealer, it now rattles worse. It’s annoying and would stop us from buying another. My son had the same problem and his Boston dealer added a washer. Our dealer had tried two other methods.

Great car with two problems

I love my ionic, but there are two problems. 1) The rear hatch rattles like crazy. 2) the rear shock absorbers are inadequate. On rough pavement at highway speeds the car loses stability.

Great - when it works

Having leased the car in June 2024, my review is primarily based on recent events. The ICCU died on 1/7/26 and 32 days later I have no ETA on the replacement part, no loaner from Hyundai or offer to cover cost of a rental, and no offer from Hyundai to compensate me for the lease payments I continue to make. After 3 weeks, the dealer said they had a loaner for me but it had been recalled and they were waiting for parts to arrive. I then contacted the corporate customer relations team and seemed like they may push for a quick resolution on the two latter items, but now they seem to be delaying -"still reviewing the situation with our internal team." They seemingly lack the ability to empathize or to make it right, at least with any expediency. Would anyone treated in such a manner consider buying another product from the company or recommending them? It's time or past time to contact a lawyer.
