Pleased toI Own an IONIQ5

Reliable so far for 20,000 miles. The service by my Hyundai dealers in Pittsburgh area (particularly Bowser) have been excellent. -also in Baltimore area Handsome and unique styling - not a "clone" of other vehicles - but "inviting" to want to drive. Minimal engine vibration or noise. Worth extra cost if owned for over 3 years - mostly recouped by not purchasing fossil fuel.

A Great Car for Senior Citizens

We leased our 2023 Ioniq 5 for two years. It had a few issues during the first four months, but our dealership (Ken Ganley in Norwalk, Ohio) promptly dealt with them all. And they provided a loaner when the repair/upgrade was for several days. For seniors, charging in the garage provides a safe and weather free opportunity to charge up. It also allows us to drive at 25% of the fuel cost ICE cars would cost. It was dependable, safe and comfortable. In fact, when our lease expired, we leaded a 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and are having the same great experience with it. If we were younger and more "Road Warrior" in our lifestyle, perhaps a hybrid would be a better option; However, since we seldom drive on trips more than 100 miles from home and charge at home almost all the time, this is the perfect car for us.

Using warranty is too difficult; you have to prove your case to dealer

We purchased a new 2023 IONIQ 5 AWD in Sept 2023. It came with a defective rear motor electric oil pump, which users do not discover unless the rear motor overheats (I think the threshold was 200 degrees F) and shuts off. For us, that came in summer of 2024 when we took our first road trip with the vehicle. When we noticed the failure we had to abort our trip and return home immediately on only FWD power. Not safe on interstates. We took the car into our local dealership, and after 1 month (!) and a lot of phone calls back and forth to the dealer and Hyundai, they were not "convinced" there was a problem. I got the defective car back with no work done after a month. I then scheduled another appointment at a dealer 1 hour away and purchased a ODB2 scanner to perform diagnosis myself. After having to get that hard evidence of the failure and providing it to the dealer, they grudgingly ordered a new part and installed it (rear EOP). That fixed the car problem, but the customer service problem remains. There was no acknowledgement from Hyundai USA of the issue (we are NOT the only ones with this problem, they KNOW about it) and they are not instructing their dealers to properly diagnose and repair the issue. And worst of all is our need to "convince" a dealer of an intermittent problem that does not consistently show itself like this one. The warranty looks good on paper but is useless in practice when you need to waste hours upon hours on the phone and driving to different dealers to get a problem resolved on a NEW CAR that we spent over $50K on!! The car is good when its working, but it has other flaws unrelated to this issue: no rear wiper (very hard to deal with living in Vermont), low ground clearance, and flimsy plastic body parts on the exterior that do not hold up to use.

Great car, but

Love this little spaceship! It's so much fun to drive around town!

This car is amazing! It's a fun car to drive around town and anywhere about an hour away. It's extremely spacious on the inside, has the coolest technology and design. I especially love being able to customize the interior lighting. I love how easy it is to drive and park and it has tons of storage space. Compared to other EV's it's the most spacious regarding design. I would have given it 4.5 stars, but there wasn't that option. The down sides were as follows: The hatchback is loose and although they repaired it once it still makes noise when you hit bumps, there is no back window windshield wiper which allows the back to get really dirty and you can't see if it's raining as well. And this goes for most EV's but the fact that the battery runs out so fast and there still aren't enough charging stations to make a longer drive possible in a convenient way. I am leasing this vehicle for now and if it weren't for these three issues I would give this car 5 stars. It's actually been the best car I have ever owned overall and I hate to have to return it once my lease it up.

Amazing vehicle with one unresolved critical flaw: ICCU

Like many others, this was my first battery EV. Charges quickly, with its 800V architecture making it pretty future-proof for now. Road trips are easy to do if you know take reasonable steps to map out the charging stations. Charging at home is lovely. The ride is smooth and quick. After driving an EV, it's hard to even think about going back to a gas vehicle. No engine noise is a huge plus. Comfy interior, loads of headroom and the Limited's glass panorama roof is amazing to backseat riders, who also enjoy plenty of legroom. However, after having a failed ICCU after ~4000 miles, only to be replaced after 33 days(!) with the same hardware and part number, is a giant stressor on an otherwise wonderful car. This critical hardware piece has failed, leaving the 12V battery unable to charge, meaning you cannot drive the car. If you're lucky, you can limp the car to the side of the road to safety. If it happens on the highway at 75 MPH, I hope you're able to navigate off and to the side. As a parent, I now have a constant worry that it will fail again while in the middle of a forest (as a Pacific Northwester, this is common) with my child in the back. I was lucky that it first failed while about to leave a park. You'll hear a loud pop from under the backseat and alarms start going off, saying to not drive the vehicle. Hyundai Roadside Assistance came 4 hours later to tow it to the dealer. I cannot in good faith recommend this car (or any Hyundais/Kias who use the E-GMP platform) to anyone until the ICCU is fully resolved, meaning redesigned. Getting a replacement ICCU of the same make and model means it is CAN fail again, with no warning. I hope for a proper recall and repair at some point. Software recalls/updates have not fixed the ICCU from failing.
