Solid Family EV - Gets the Big Things Right but Fumbles the Small Ones

The i9 nails the things that matter most for a family EV: space, comfort, ride quality, range and charging performance all deliver. The third row is usable by actual adults, the car drives and handles better than expected for a vehicle of this size. The controls are fairly straightforward, nothing feels too buried in menus or requires a manual to figure out. The charging speeds and range are as advertised. The tech and convenience features, however, are rough around the edges. The system doesn't recognize which phone or digital key is approaching and load that person's profile automatically. In a household with multiple drivers, having to switch the profile gets old fast. The built in navigation system is a weak point, Hyundai should have licensed the Google Maps API rather than building their own Nav system. We use CarPlay pretty much 100% of the time, but if you are navigating to a charger via CarPlay rather than the native nav system, the battery won't precondition for fast charging along the way. The self presenting door handles are a miss too, and the lack of a walk away auto lock is an even bigger miss. You can't even hit the lock button from inside before stepping out, instead you're required to press the closed door handle to lock it. For a vehicle at this price point, it's a strange omission. There is no pet mode built-in, another major oversight and one that seems easy to fix via an OTA update. There's also no option to have the middle row seats return to a default position when passengers exit, you're stuck manually readjusting them every time. This undercuts the the otherwise excellent second/third row usability. The frunk is too small to be genuinely useful for storage and the key fob is the worst design on the market right now, it is clunky in hand and seemingly designed without much thought for everyday use.

Love the Vehicle, Frustrated by the Tech

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 is a solid, well‑built vehicle with excellent driving comfort and overall craftsmanship. Unfortunately, the software experience significantly lags behind the quality of the car itself. The computer system feels outdated — it’s essentially the same interface and performance I had in my Genesis four years ago. It’s slow, laggy, and often unresponsive. CarPlay connection is inconsistent at best; many times I’m already halfway down the street before my phone connects, if it connects at all. User profiles also load very slowly, which makes everyday use frustrating. I’m also disappointed with how limited and inflexible the user profile system is. My husband and I share this vehicle, and switching between profiles is cumbersome, unreliable, and gives us very little control over settings. Even my dealership couldn’t offer a solution or workaround. Overall, the Ioniq 9 is a beautifully engineered car held back by an outdated and sluggish software ecosystem. I hope Hyundai prioritizes meaningful improvements to the infotainment system, user profiles, and CarPlay reliability — because the vehicle deserves better technology than what’s currently installed.

OMG! I absolutely love this car!

I have owned many cars, and many more expensive cars. But this is by far the most luxurious I have owned. The Bose active noise cancellation in the cabin makes for the most peaceful driving experience. It has so many bells and whistles that I keep discovering something new it will do, all the time. I’m anxious to see if full self driving becomes an option in the future. But for now the Highway Driving Assist does everything I need. I have had many hybrids including plug-ins, but this is my first full EV. I drove from Texas to California the first month I owned it, and it was the most comfortable cross country drive I have ever done. Absolutely no regrets whatsoever about this purchase. In fact with current dealer incentives, I think it was a bargain!

Performance and spaciousness a plus. Internal controls and displays a

Performance is great. Mileage is poor (miles per kWh) but that is to be expected with a 3 ton vehicle. Hopefully that will improve as technology advances. Very roomy with tons of seating and cargo room. It is a little too big though for everyday use. I do wish there was a "Goldilocks" size. An electric two row SUV about the size of the Santa Fe. That would be perfect. The climate controls are poor. Apart from being capacitive touch which is not the best for controls you might need while driving, the blue lights over the seat heating and cooling are very hard to see in good lighting and impossible to see in certain instances. I don't know how that slipped through the design phase. Also very disappointed that ALL the climate settings don't carry over after shutdown and restart. SCC is very choppy and at times relatively abrupt. MY last EV (BMW i4) was much smoother. Also, it is not very easy or consistent to increase the selected speed by 5 mph. I would suggest a two position switch like BMW uses where pushing through a detent moves the speed by 5 mph. The auto function for the rear lift gate is unacceptably slow. Either speed it up or add a foot kick option like every other manufacturer in the world. The door handles are annoying. Traditional door handles are much better.

Love This Car

I love this car. There are a few things that could be improved like less plastic on the exterior. Plastic scratches easily, especially with winter snow, ice, sand, and salt on the road.

Great Ride!

Nice ride. Paint is cheap, and scratches easily, but other than that we have no complaints. It is a nice first EV. Everyone has a space. It worked well hauling all the fixings for a college dorm room.

Quick powerful and fun, but ..

As the title suggested, there is a lot that is good to great about this car. Powerful acceleration, luxury interior features, no emissions. But it's also quit large/bulky with a wide turning radius, which I'm still negotiating after a year. It can be difficult to park head in. Initial quality was also a little disappointing. The in-seat control buttons were not secure and I've had to pop them back in at times. The plastic surface on the front row console cracked shortly after acquiring the car. Worst was the driver door window that cracked the second time I rolled down (we won't discuss the attitude of the service rep at the dealership). Range varies considerably between winter and summer. I can get about 280 or 290 on a full charge (not going below 5% battery) in the warm months, and 80 to 90 miles less during the cold months (and I won't dare let the charge fall below 10%).

Love My Beautiful Green Vehicle

The vehicle is beautiful and the main reason I got the vehicle was because of the color. That green is extraordinary! The vehicle is quiet and roomy. Everything was going great as we approached the first year. Then the vehicle up and quit on me. ICCU & fuse failure. Roadside assistance came and picked up the vehicle and they had to bypass 2 Hyundai dealerships to find a third that was actually EV certified. So I was out of town with no vehicle to drive. About 10 days later I got my vehicle back. Everything seems to be good again but this episode sticks in the back of my mind, wondering if it’s going to happen again. This was unfortunate being that everything up until then was perfect. Hyundai! Fix this part so that this doesn’t happen again!

Drives great, accessories and electrical tend to break

I love the way this car drives! Fast acceleration and very smooth. Easy to charge at home and use the app to configure charging options. I like that it still has buttons with the large screen on the dash instead of only an iPad. Air conditioning is colder than any car I’ve previously owned. Kids love the space and electric up/down of the 3rd row is very convenient. Unfortunately my car has had a multitude of accessory things break - seat adjustment buttons, console wouldn’t open, kids door handle wouldn’t open/extend out of car and a trim piece misaligned which scratched the paint and caused a very annoying squeak. I’ve also had unexplained electrical issues: air conditioning stopped working, wiper blades stopped working in a rainstorm, charge port repeatedly clicking while car is on/driving and then a randomly dead battery one morning in my garage. Every time I bring it in they can’t “duplicate the issue” and give me the car back (they’ve shown me the car repeatedly has low voltage codes but they don’t know where it’s coming from). So overall the car is amazing, but as it’s the first generation Hyundai needs to fine tune the small things. I hope my electrical problems fix themselves - it’s my understanding that no other Ioniq 9s have come in with these problems so it’s prob just my car.

Overall, I really like the IONIQ 9, but there are two major disappointments for a vehicle costing around $70,000. First, there is no memory-seat function. I share the car with my wife, and changing the seat and mirror positions every time we switch drivers is very inconvenient. Second, the 360° surround-view camera is disappointing at night. The sides of the vehicle are too dark, and there are no LED lights under the side mirrors to illuminate the ground. The camera guidelines also do not always accurately match the vehicle’s position, making parking more difficult and increasing the risk of scratching or damaging the car. These features should be improved.
