Note for 1st-Time Owners
I purchased my ‘05 Tundra in 2024. It’s a V8 4x4 Regular Cab with 17” stock alloy wheels and a Jeraco 8’ cap in the rust belt. I am 24 and have little to compare to when it comes to pickups, so here’s my feedback:
My frame recall was closed in 2014 with a spray coating. It hadn’t been recoated again until 2025. Cross-members and frame patches aren’t expensive, but the labor is. I strongly recommend first-time buyers of this truck reference the 1st Gen thread on the online Tundra forum and seek a pre-purchase inspection. The outstanding engines and transmissions on this truck belong to a maintenance-critical schedule. Lower Ball Joints and the Timing BELT MUST be replaced every 100K. The “sealed” transmission and diffs need fluid changes every 60K. The 2005 SAIS system throws “limp mode” engine codes when it goes bad, usually around 150K. I do not recommend a Dorman pump for this system; the machining of screw-down points is abysmal, even if everything else works. The driveshaft carrier bearing does wear out and cause a jitter on the road. The exhaust manifolds eventually make noise. The climate control cables get stiff in the cold. The fog lights are worth enabling, if they aren’t already. Tyler208 and JDM Driveway are excellent YouTube references. The styling is plain, boring, and driver controls “feel instantly to hand”. I very much plan to hold onto this truck as long as possible.
