Faultless service, smoothly delivered
Hugely impressed with our experience with Handz On last week. We needed our car serviced at short notice and prepped for the long run from MI to FL, and it was handled with expert care and attention. The car behaved faultlessly on the 1,200-mile drive and we had no worries at all on the journey (except for the usual traffic nightmare through Atlanta). Would have no hesitation in recommending them for future work.

Go to Handz On, not the dealership!!!
What a GREAT experience. I will never take my Mercedes to the dealership for service again. Scott and his crew were very professional and quickly diagnosed a problem the dealership could not handle.

Poor customer service. Condescending to women
Charged for diagnostics. When asked for a report, their machine was broken. Condescending to women. Apparently women do not understand cars.

UNETHICAL- AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!
When changing brakes, this company damaged the door of my son's car and will not pay to fix it. It's insane. The owner is trying to give him the run-around - saying it will take corporate MONTHS to respond on something like this. This is absolutely insane.

Fantastic Service
Chris Smith and his staff are absolutely fantastic. My 2003 Vw Passat developed a misfire. I usually take the car to Chris; however, I live around the corner from Lansing Car Care at S Cedar and Mt Hope. Like four days and almost $400 later, the car was still misfiring. Rather than doing a professional diagnosis, I got the impression they were guessing. Finally said enough is enough and had the car towed to Handz On. Chris has it diagnosed in like 1-1/2 hours: bad fuel injector on cylinder #3. This was the Wednesday before thanksgiving. Chris ordered the injector that day. It came in Friday morning and I had the car back Friday afternoon. You won’t go wrong taking your vehicle to Handz On.

Chris was very knowledgeable about the issues with my vehicle. He took the time to explain the issues, and gave suggestions on what needed to be fixed now, and what could be fixed later. Great customer service.

Spent 3k+ on Tranny then this happened...
We dropped off our 2014 Ford Fusion at Handz on Foreign Auto Repair to see why the light was on. It was driving great but the fuel economy had dipped slightly so we figured due diligence was important. As it turned out the car would soon need a new transmission. We even took it to Ford (we purchased the car from Spartan Toyota) they said we missed the recall and wanted over 5k. It was still driving great, not slipping or anything. Things ramped up when when our Malibu was totaled colliding with a deer. Time to make sure the Fusion was all set, Chris said he could beat the dealer by half so we purchased a tranny ahead of time that way they’d already have it and the car could be fixed to fit our schedules during the pandemic. Thanx to the deer we needed to buy a new car. We had given Handz On 1k down for a job a few weeks away essentially, purchased the new car and were now ready to drop off the Fusion. We had the money and wanted it to go to the right place. Seemed we had found the place with Handz On. Well, when it came time we dropped the car off. Understood we’d have it back in about a week. As it turned out the transmission had not arrived on time which was disappointing but even worse it ended up that the part had not ever been ordered. They had a good reason for that I admit albeit frustrating to find out that Chris, the lead mechanic had found me a used tranny for cheap (remember we had already given a 1k deposit) but Handz On was amidst a policy change that only allowed them to purchase a certified part that included warranty. We were confused about what had happened and why our car was not done because Chris was not clear with us. He said the part would be there after the weekend. As though he had ordered it. When things began to not add up, it was like pulling teeth getting the afore mentioned information about the new policy for parts. Once we talked to upper management they wanted to give us a deal, make everything right blah blah blah. We were sorta relived but had no idea what could happen next. They have us a loaner car, that’s cool. Well we drove it for a solid 2 weeks before our 2014 Fusion was “done”.
Why so long?
As Chris told me him self, some wench jack that they needed to drop the new 3,900 transmission in had broke. He said he got the guys of the shop together to try and man power it in but couldn’t pull it off because “they are pu**ys” I quote Chris specifically here.
So...we were upset but we waited. Everything was going to be better now we thoughts. We were wrong.
Call came on a Friday, a chipper Chris said the car was mostly done and that I could pick it up further commenting “starting to like that turbo”. I’m lost by this comment as it turns out the 2014 fusion has a mini sort turbo that helps with the fuel economy. Ok. He then says yeah you need a bushing to keep the tranny from knocking or sliding within the engine or something. To me it’s mechanic talk, he also assured me that I could pick it up we’d look at that other part soon. I hit further comforted by parts man Tim. He said “oh that thing” back in the 60’s we used to take that part off to make our cars like race cars”. I’m thinking ok that’s not my intention but the car is fine right? He says oh sure.
Ok here’s where the real fun begins I pick up the car and decide to drive country roads home to Bath from the west side of Lansing. Cool. Half way home the check engine light came on. I called and left a message while still driving home. I figured there was a reasonable explanation so I just drove home.
3 hours later I needed to use the car so I got on the Hwy in Bath. I made it DeWitt road and had to pull off. My car was jerking and and being weird. Popped the hood on the side of the road and went to check the dip stick , when I pulled it out a puff of smoke cane out the hole. Is there oil in there? The dip stick was dry as a bone. I can’t see any oil inside the engine through the cap. It’s after hours for the shop so I can’t call them. My buddy brings me oil for the car. After putting the oil in the car I started it and the smoke began.
The car was towed back to Handz On just hours after paying 3,900 for its repairs.
As it turned out a piston had cracked and I believe it happened before the car was picked up. It seems my country ride home allowed a slow drain of remaining oil in the engine because I did not have issues or break down. As I said earlier the car sat at home for a few hours. After the incident I made note that no oil leaked into our assigned car port spot.
The results of this, the leaking piston draining oil, our freshly returned car now has a cracked block we owe MSUFCU over 6k for this 2014 Fusion. Now Handz on says they did nothing wrong and a new engine block would be 4K more. We were be side our selves about this with no solution Chris told my wife we could park the car there as long as we wanted to it was the least they could do. As I type this now the car was towed to a yard because Handz on could t reach us. I discovered almost two weeks ago that Chris had left me messages. He left none for my wife. My wife, whose a attorney, was never reached. Chris read her phone number back with one digit amiss. I call BS on that because Handz On has contacted my wife on more than one occasion before...why is the number wrong now. I’ve already personally been pulled off the”case” because my relationship with Chris had become fractured beyond repair. Apparently they “tried” to contact us for weeks. The repair shop only finally sent a letter when it was already too late. They had our car towed to Shroyers and listed as abandoned. Tried to contact us for weeks but never sent a letter when phones weren’t answering their call. They new how bad out situation had turned and it seems to me that if they really did care at all about us as customers, what’s more people, then they’d have tried a little harder before they towed us off. One more postage stamp maybe one week earlier..due diligence!?

I highly recommend taking your business anywhere else. They’re nice at at Handz On, make you feel good. Problem is they drop the ball, deny responsibility, keep info from you, tell white lies and in the end leave you feeling like a complete means to their end. Handz On certainly doesn’t go the extra mile, Chris has a way of sighing and making you feel like he’s giving you his very best, who knows maybe this is his very best.
We need better.
You’ve been warned and would do well to look further.

Go to DeWitt Service instead. Save your car and your sanity.

HONESTY - CONCERN - KNOWLEDGE
Finding an auto shop you can trust to give you a completely honest diagnoses at all times is rare. Handz On Auto Care on West Saginaw in Lansing is that place. Manager and Master Mechanic Chris Smith can always be counted on to treat any auto problem you have from needing a new rear view mirror to overhauling your brake system with the same concern, detailed explanation and unbelievable knowledge of any make and model you own...foreign or domestic. And they don't charge an arm and a leg either! Always satisfied with the extremely reasonable charges.
Am a long time customer...….you can't go wrong!
