I dropped off my 2013 Smart Fourtwo after calling to ensure this shop could do an oil change. The next call I received was from the mechanic telling me that the drain plug had stripped and ruined the oil pan. He indicated that the prior mechanic must have tightened the plug too much. I asked why didn't he use a vacuum pump if the plug couldn't easily be loosened? His response was, "I didn't think of that!" Later, the owner stated that it could have been that the drain plug was put in when the engine was hot and it melded into the oil pan alloy. I again mentioned that a Reverso pump was often used with Smart cars, but he said they only had car-specific fittings on their vacuum pump. I was shocked when I picked up my Smarty 3 or 4 days later with a bill of $870! Granted, they also found a broken engine mount, and I did not specifically ask for an estimate beforehand, but with my prior oil change (in Wytheville VA) being $59, I was not expecting a mortgage payment size bill. I mentioned that to the mechanic, but he indicated that he had no control over the cost. They seemed like nice people, but be sure to ask for an estimate and make sure that they have worked on your type of car.
