I didn't have a good experience
I have a 2013 Honda CR-V. I noticed it jittering between 25 mph to 40 mph. After excluding all other possible causes, I believed the problem was caused by the transmission. One repair shop recommended Coleman Taylor Transmissions in Franklin. I took my car there and they claimed the problem was caused by "a torque converter failure". The cost of repair was $3900. Usually I do whatever the repair shop says to get things done and get it over with it. However this price was a surprise to me, I expected a high price tag for a transmission work but, not this high, so I crunched the numbers with the front desk lady; it turned out the exact price should be around $3860; they had rounded UP. No business should ever round up on the customer. This was my first warning sign. Anyway I told them "go ahead, do the repair". I also asked them, since it would take them two weeks to order parts and do the work, could I still keep the car to use while waiting for the parts? They said "no", because they don't want to “hold the bags” if people change their minds after they order parts. This was my second warning sign. Later I started to do my homework and found that almost everyone online said replacing a torque converter should cost about $1000 and a third-party torque converter only cost $250. I called the shop again and asked them to tell me how they came up with $2500 parts cost. This is what I was told: because the torque converter is broken and it will produce a lot of metal debris, this debris will damage other parts in the transmission, such as gears, belts...etc. so they all should be replaced. At this moment, I knew what the lady said was not right! I happen to know there is a magnetic piece in the transmission to catch these metal debris; unless the converter is totally shattered and produces large metal pieces, this debris should not damage the gears! This was my final warning call. I cancelled the order and retrieved my car.
I took the car to Honda dealership, after inspection, they told me that Honda had a service call. Because of some bugs in their transmission software, some Honda cars will stutter at a certain speed range when the gas pedal is hit. The solution was updating the software and flushing the transmission fluid; if this doesn't fix the problem, then they would look into the torque converter. They assured me that the total cost would not be more than $2500 in the worst case. They also told me that they don't understand why someone would want to replace all the gears when replacing a torque converter.
On the second day the dealership told me the car was ready to go. After updating the software and flushing the transmission fluid, the problem is GONE! My cost of repair, $650. They also showed me a photo of the magnetic piece, there is only a minimum amount of metal debris, which is normal wear-and-tear. It turns out, MY TRANSMISSION WAS NOT BROKEN AT ALL!!!
I checked out the shop’s reputation before I came in. The fact that they have all these 5-star reviews really impressed me. I had full faith and trust when I dropped my car to them. Unfortunately it maybe just my bad luck, I didn’t have a good experience with them and I can't recommend this business to anyone. I am baffled that they are professionals specialized in transmissions, and they can't even tell a good transmission from bad??? I just don't know what happen to them and don’t want to judge.
I have all the documentation to back up what I said.
