Mike, I did reach out via phone and you did agree to remove this review for a number of reasons, one of which being that the code that you came in with, had not returned after my repairs. There is a possibility of the vehicle having a few issues at the same time that all needed repair, which seems to be the case here.
As far as not being able to give a direct answer as to what was going on, auto repair isn't always cut and dry as far as being 100% sure on every single situation as certain things cannot be checked. Sometimes in the repair manuals, it will say to replace a component and retest, if the problem still exists, go to the next step.
Your car had a issue with the turbocharger a month prior to coming to 829 Auto and the turbocharger was replaced by a different shop, with a brand that should not even be making auto parts, due to their extremely high failure rate. This assembly - the turbocharger, wastegate, and diverter valve assembly, was replaced as a complete unit and you were still getting a "P0299 - Turbo Underboost" code. There are two vacuum solenoids which will control the boost/vacuum that are linked to the wastegate and diverter valve and this was what I had reccommended and performed as a repair since the turbocharger assembly was just replaced, and the vehicle had passed the smoke test. These solenoids control boost pressure directly via the signals from the computer, and everything else on the system was just changed out that had any sort of boost control. After changing out these two solenoids, the vehicle still had a low power condition, but that P0299 code had never returned. Before finishing up with the car, I did put additional time into diagnosis to further look for a reason why this could be happening and what did I find? The brand new Dorman turbo had so much excessive shaft play, that the turbine wheel was able to contact the housing and make a screetching sound. Not if, but when, the turbo does this in the near future while running, it will blow the turbo ( going from possibly over 10,000+ rpms and digging into the housing to a stop ) and you could potentially be looking at replacing the engine if shrapnal makes its way all the way into the combustion chamber. This happened to my personal vehicle. I found this excessive play and notified you as well as showed you a video of what I found, but that still was not enough for you to believe me. I explained in thorough detail that this could be a bad design from Dorman, or it could be improper installation as the initial startup and purging of air in the oil feed line is so important. If not done correctly it can destroy a brand new turbocharger due to lack of oil as well as excessive rpm startup speed while having a lack of lubrication. Once this was found, I showed you everything and explained it all in detail, suggesting to go back to that shop that installed the turbo and get them to replace the turbo under warranty as that could very well cause this issue if the turbocharger is binding up.
When discussing everything on the phone after you had left my shop, it was found at the dealership that you had a clogged cat as well. If the play in the turbine wheel did not have excessive play, I would have continued diagnosis until it was figured out. Part of diagnosis would be to drive the vehicle, and knowing the true condition of the turbo, I would not risk potenially having to buy you a brand new engine, turbo, and intercooler, due to doing strenuous testing on a vehicle with an obvious known problem. I absolutely did the right thing by suggesting to have it warrantied and stopping with what I had found.
As far as the debit vs credit situation, I ran my personal debit card after we had a couple failed attempts to run your card. My card processed through without any issue, this had to do with your card, and not the processor. You were not forced to do anything, as you could have paid cash as well, which a trip to the bank could have made that possible. Customers always have options ( credit, debit, any payment type like apple pay from their phone, etc, and cash ) as far as payment types and whichever they so choose, we work with that. Anything credit related gets a fee of 3% by our processor provider, so we must pass that on to the customer instead of losing money. That is the only payment type with a fee, but the choice is up to the customer. This is stated on the work order at the time of initial drop off, which you had signed. It is also posted on our wall in black and white, as well as being highlighted for anyone who had missed it in the past, and to prevent future issues like this from occurring.
There was zero guesswork performed in the repairs what so ever. As far as pricing or "overpriced" goes, I hired someone who currently works at the Hyundai dealer as a technician, and previously he was the shop foreman and technician at the local VW dealer. That gentleman was fired from 829 Auto within a month as his work quality was terrible, and I have high quality standards within my shop. This is why to this day, I work alone. If Hyundai is ok with that type of work quality, so be it, but my work quality is better and I charge more than they do because of it. If you look a bit deeper into what I do at 829 Auto, I primarily am doing European performance work and my hourly rate relfects that. Everything I did was spot on just like the following review after yours says, but unfortunately for me I work in an industry that is generally viewed as dishonest. I can guarantee you one thing, if I did dishonest work, I would never have made it to being one of the highest rated shops on Google in this area, or the area in New York that I had moved the shop from. I would ask that you keep your word, and remove this review as you said that you would on the phone.
Thank you for the rescore!
Thanks Martin, I appreciate the great review!
