I just got the run around by another mechanic. Because they refused to investigate, another issue manifested and I had to find a mechanic I could trust, which just keeps getting harder. I got transmission work done here a couple years ago, and the reviews looked good.
I was not pleased by who I spoke to on Monday morning. I already called Wednesday 7/9 and had to schedule for Monday 7/14 because they were booked. I was able to live with that. Because the radiator fan started blaring at full speed nonstop, I didn't want to drive it, especially 35 minutes, so I had it towed because we have AAA and it's covered. Whoever I spoke to on Monday was impatient, I couldn't get a word in edgewise, and also asked why I wanted to have it towed. I mean, does it matter? Are you paying for it? This is a 13 year-old car, I don't want to play games because already I have to blow through my savings paying these mechanics.
I had a P0597 check engine light. I admit I was freaked out by the side effects (blaring radiator fan), so I did try a couple times to have them look into the water pump, anything else. I'm not trying to be a backseat mechanic, but when people keep letting you down you lose trust, you scour internet forums like a freak, and you just want someone to investigate.
Unfortunately, like basically everyone else in the Hudson Valley, I got taken for a ride in terms of price. Original estimate was $515 before coolant. No way it should've cost more than $525 before tax (which is already painful). So they low-balled estimate by nearly $100 just like the last mechanic I went to, said they did the inspection (I spoke to Anthony on Monday night when it was ready, and I asked him point blank if they did the inspection and he said yes) yet they didn't, so now I have to schedule it somewhere else. $581 before tax ($628 after). $420 for labor. I looked up the part they used and it should cost $70, so they more than double charged for that even though I told them it didn't need to be rushed when authorizing the work. So they basically took $140 in "gotcha" money from me after someone else screwed me over. Nice, right?
