I took my 2012 Mini Cooper Countryman All4 in for a new water pump and some overdue suspension repair. This was my first time using this shop and I was very impressed from the outset. The owner has been doing this for decades and knows his stuff. He put me at ease that I was not going to be taken advantage of.
He was up front about the limitations he works under. If the work that needs done involves a dealer-only part, he will refuse the work. There is too much risk that if the part is bad, getting a replacement will be a nightmare that is neither good for him or the customer.
Fortunately the work I needed done did not involve a dealer-only part. I am happy with the work and the estimate he gave me is exactly what I paid, even though I asked for a tweak to the alignment from the factory spec after the work was already all done. The negative camber on the rear wheels is aggressive from the factory. It can be decreased from factory spec, but not far enough that the wheels are close to vertical. On his own accord, he looked up some aftermarket control arms that would allow much more adjustment. He gave me the information but didn't pressure me to have the work done. That impressed me a lot, enough to have him do that work if I ever choose to have it done.
The only negative feedback I can give is that the car was in his shop for over a week. His initial estimate was 2-3 days. His is a small shop and there were extenuating circumstances with one of his employees making him short handed. I hesitate to even bring it up, but I just want people to know the risks if they need a significant amount of work done in a short amount of time.
