I'm very sorry you feel this way ma'am, but I think it’s fair to point a few things out.
The symptom needs to present itself for us to diagnose anything, otherwise we'd just be throwing parts at a problem we haven't experienced & that wouldn't be a very above-board way to run a car repair business.
You brought your car in because you heard a belt squealing and signed off for 30 minutes of diagnostic. We spent 20 minutes test driving the vehicle and let it run for another hour and a half on a lift & it never once made the squealing noise you brought it in for. We're very thankful that your husband had seen the tensioner bouncing & shared that information with us eventually, as we were able to correctly diagnose the issue a few minutes after.
We went well beyond the allotted diagnostic time at no extra cost to you, & while it's unfortunate the belt didn't squeal in that time, that's absolutely not the fault of our tech.
We need to be paid for our time. That half hour of diagnostic was going to be credited toward the repairs we recommended, but you chose to not have them done. So yes, you were charged for 30 minutes of diagnostic time, less than half of the time we actually spent on the vehicle. If you still need that work done, the diagnostic fee will still be applied to the recommended work as is our practice.
