It was the last day of the semester and my wife was helping my daughter move back home from school. After packing and on their way out of town I got a call saying that the Z4 would not start. Since I was also out of town and they had 2 cars between them I asked them to have the Z4 towed to Eurasian garage and they could just go home and not worry about it.
The guy I spoke to at Eurasian garage was very cordial and I was told that there were oil leaks everywhere (oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. very normal for older BMWs) but the oil filter gasket was what caused the problem and that oil leaked out onto the belt and caused the issue. He asked if I wanted all 3 oil leaks fixed. I said since I do most of the work on the cars I just want it good enough to drive home so just fix the main oil leak. For those who aren't familiar BMWs are notorious for leaking oil so for someone who has 6 BMWs I wasn't worried about the leak just didn't want my family stranded. I have a lift at the house and would do the more difficult and expensive fixes myself.
Long story short I did the other 2 gaskets, that in fact also had small leaks like I was told, but as time went by we found that the simplest of the repairs that I paid over $1000 for (that I can do in 2 hours with an $11 gasket) is back to leaking so bad that the belt has shredded again.
