For several years, I have consistently brought my vehicle to Auto Care Specialist for all my maintenance and repair needs and have generally been satisfied with their service. However, my recent experience on 4/14/2025 has left me feeling taken advantage of and questioning the value of their labor charges.
On this visit, I had my wiper blades replaced among other services. To my surprise, I was charged $66.70 in labor alone for this seemingly simple task. While I understand that Auto Care Specialist is a professional service and incurs overhead costs, I was particularly taken aback by the breakdown of the labor time: 35 minutes for the front wiper blades and 23 minutes for a single rear wiper blade.
I am aware that auto parts stores like Auto Zone often offer free wiper blade installation as a courtesy to their customers. While I wasn't necessarily expecting a free service from Auto Care Specialist, the amount of time billed for this task seems excessive. It's difficult to understand how replacing three wiper blades could reasonably take nearly an hour of a mechanic's time.
This experience has unfortunately eroded the trust I had built with Auto Care Specialist over the years. While I have appreciated their past services, this recent charge for a straightforward task feels unwarranted and has made me reconsider whether I will continue to bring my vehicle here for future work.
I hope Auto Care Specialist will review their labor charges for simple maintenance tasks and consider the impact such charges have on customer satisfaction and loyalty.
I will add here that this one bad experience is just one bad experience of many, many satisfied experiences. I have trusted them with everything from engine replacement to my regular maintenance for several years. If they don't want to be inconvenienced with small mundane tasks I rather them tell me that and be honest and forthcoming them charging me $66.70 for labor. That's not a whole lot money to some, but it is to me..

When visiting a shop for the first time, I always have several general elements to evaluate: 1. Are they competent?; 2. Are they honest?; 3. Is the labor rate reasonable?; 4. Do they up-sell?

My answers: 1. Yes, 2. Yes, 3. Yes, 4. No.

I went in for a general inspection of my 08 Camry and an replacement of a rust-coated downstream O2 sensor. The rusted out sensor was carefully removed, and replaced.

As for the General Inspection, a text link to xoxocar.com provides a summary of findings, with a familiar (and sortable) red, yellow and green status summaries of 32 items checked (along with photos and recommendations on future service items). I was visually able to verify the overwhelming majority of them. I will DIY the easy fixes, and return to ACS for what requires more diagnostic and repair time (in this case, slow loss of coolant pressure and the replacement of trailing arm bushings).

The one item that was not detailed, in the report, had to do with a ring of brown stains midway on the #3 & #4 ignition coils, and some brown (ear wax-like) build up on the boots, and on the end of #4 coil itself. With Q-Tips, I removed the build-up and put some dielectric grease on the outside of the boots. (The spark plugs themselves were dry and burning without any significant discoloration).

I had no misfires, so that was not a major issue.

In sum: Highly recommended shop, the technicians know what to look for, and a shop interested in developing longer-term relationships built on trust.

Good Hearted Mechanic Shop!

The team got the job done quickly and fairly priced. Being a girl that doesn't know much about cars, I am cautious about auto shops taking advantage of my lack of knowledge.
